In Italian, her name means “Battle.” Letizia Battaglia died on April 13th, 2022. A politically active journalist and photographer, she documented and denounced the mafia and corruption for over 20 years, in Palermo from the 70s to the early 90s. She was the friend of judges Falcone and Borsellino. Her 600,000 photos bear witness to the blood crimes and thousands of faces of Sicily in those terrible times. Letizia Battaglia made her life a conquest of freedom and her art a permanent commitment. She has also made visible the forgotten, captured the tenderness of children and the resilience of women’s bodies. Through her iconic, never-before-seen photographs, and the voices of her closest ones, the film stirs up the most powerful years in contemporary Italian history.
