TO KILL IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE SAINT BATHOLOMEW

Paris, August 1572. In a Europe divided that is seeking to bolster peace after ten years of religious wars, a royal wedding strikes a note of hopefulness. She’s Catholic (Queen Margot), he’s Protestant (Henri de Navarre). But the assassination of the Protestant leader four days after the ceremony, breaks the fragile peace and sets off the powder keg. On St Bartholomew’s Day, united in their hatred, frenzied Parisians unleash the merciless massacre of their Protestant neighbors. It quickly spreads across the country in an unprecedented wave of violence.

Ten years after the St Bartholomew’s Day massacre, Jean, a survivor who was 13 years-old at the time of the massacre, leads the investigation to understand how his father and brother died. Jean’s search for the truth brings him to question the witnesses, participants and those in power at the time. He obtains documents and archives that provide precious clues. His goal: to unmask the murderers.

Imagine a major investigative documentary about the greatest massacre of the European wars of religion, St Bartholomew’s Day, and those tragic weeks that left more than 10,000 dead.
We will lead an investigation to understand the events and series of decisions as documentary filmmakers would have at the time – day-by-day, up to the worst of outcomes. How did it come to this? Who was responsible?
It’s a story that takes us back to the scenes of the drama, from palace hallways to the cobblestoned streets.
It’s an investigation of local crimes, a neighborly massacre. It’s a story that evokes the mechanisms and consequences of the darkest and most dangerous aspects of religious fanaticism.
