Along the Pacific coast in northern Peru, the bodies of hundreds of children and baby llamas are unearthed. All were sacrificed in the 15th century, during the time of the Chimú civilization, the last great kingdom of the Andes before the arrival of the Incas and the Conquistadors. This is an unprecedented discovery. There is no scientific evidence of another mass sacrifice of this nature and scale in any other civilization. How and why were these sacrifices performed? An international, multidisciplinary scientific team is investigating both in the field and in the laboratory. Peruvians, French, and Americans work together to unravel the mysteries of the Chimor kingdom, from its peak to its downfall.
